Minerals that make you money - not cost you money

Until recently little information existed regarding the mineral status of Irish forages. To address this problem Alltech Ireland have run a countrywide forage analysis survey. The result indicates some clear issues and problem areas.

87% Low copper availability - Copper status in general in low. However the antagonists (molybdenum and iron) are exacerbating the problem.
Very low Zinc Status - Zinc levels were 20% lower than those in a similar survey carried out countrywide in 2000.
Extremely Low Selenium Status - The analysis showed that background selenium levels were negligible, with Vitamin E levels also extremely low.

Effective Supplementation 
These basic deficiencies of Copper, Zinc and Selenium have traditionally been addressed by the supplementation of the mineral in the salt form such as Copper Sulphate and Zinc Oxide. However trace minerals in this form demonstrate very low availability and are not a very cost effective method of addressing these deficiencies.

Alltech Technology 
In the search for a solution to this problem Alltech's researchers have developed an organic trace mineral range called Bioplex® Trace Minerals. In Bioplex form the essential element now becomes highly available and extremely active at improving SCCs, reducing lameness and improving reproductive parameters. When the element is presented to the animal in this organic form, absorption is significantly enhanced, as the element now more closely resembles the form of minerals found in nature. By being able to mimic this natural form Alltech has created a mineral source that is extremely cost effective and capable of giving the farmer a return on his investment of greater than 8:1.

Proven Research 
A large number of research projects across the US, Europe and more specifically at UCD Lyons estate farm demonstrated that using Bioplex trace elements gave improvements in conception rates, services for conception and days to first service.Researchers at Lyons Estate also recorded a reduction of SCCs of 35% over the first 84 days of treatment.It is conservatively estimated that a return of €50 per cow, per year can be achieved when supplementing with Bioplex® Trace Minerals.

Cost Benefits - Two Options

Bearing in mind the high level of deficiency reported in Irish Forages and the additional problems of high level of antagonist farmers are faced with a straightforward decisions:

Option 1 Continue to purchase traditional unavailable mineral sources, which have little, impact and are seen as a direct cost.
